Hello. Just replaced the rear bearing on our 6 year old GE dryer. I was wondering if anyone had a clue as to how often the grease cup should be filled as it is a PITA to get to the thing. I have now concluded that it should be done as routine maintenance so the bearing does not wear out. A GE repairman (that came to "fix" my washer under warrantee--had to tell me how to clean the little holes in the detergent compartment that got clogged on my front loader--which is not in the user care and use guide) as well as our local appliance dealer have told us this is something that needs to be done periodically. Well--how often is periodically?

Here is a saga of the dryer bearing---dryer was squeaking like crazy--told hubby we should fill the grease cup--hubby messed around in the laudry room and later told me he did it--clothes started getting ruined--brown marks on them almost like they are being burned but actually they were catching between drum and front of dryer--meanwhile still squeaking like crazy and black dusty gunky stuff coming out of small bearing hole in the back of dryer. So--finally had enough when son's baseball shirt was ruined and started to tear apart dryer myself. Hubby came in and realized that he was caught and helped tear apart the dryer (he is an aircraft electrician--he can do these things). I noticed a couple of the plastic pieces missing off of felt on top of drum and concluded that the bearing must have worn out and caused the front of the drum to drop slightly causing a gap between drum and front of dryer--clothes might have caught on plastic glides and tore them off and then clothes get stuck in the resulting gap. I ordered parts from my favorite parts place online. Ordered rear dryer drum bearing kit, front drum glide kit (expensive!), and lower felt for drum. Soooooooo--the parts come and WOW the big bearing (knob) has a flat top on it--not the 1/2 inch circular groove worn into it like the old bearing. And hey--that plastic (nylon?) cup has groves in it--it is not supposed to be smooth--wow! (ha ha) So hubby and I have a good laugh about what we have learned and vow to keep that cup filled with grease so the bearing doesn't wear out. I send an email to GE to ask if there is a guideline as to how often this cup should be filled because it is a major chore to get to it. GE person emails me back and tells me "This procedure is beyond the level of assistance we could even offer." and she copies and pastes how I should wipe the dust off my dryer with a damp cloth and clean the lint trap with every load, etc. Ridiculous! With that comment--I decided to never buy GE again--but I still have my washer and dryer and I am not going to replace them yet. So---I decided to ask people here if anyone else has experienced this and what works for them.

Any hints? Thanks for reading!
