I attached Hardibacker to the bare studs of my 1968 master bath. Where the tile is not going, in other words, where there will be just a plain wall, I have used drywall joint compound and fiber mesh tape to fill the joints. I thought that thinset here would not sand smooth if at all but the instructions say to use thinset.
Except on one wall I have used paperless drywall. In the corners, where the Hardi and the drywall meet, I plan to use fiber mesh and joint compound.
Does this sound good or should I have used paper tape? Or thinset?

I think you'll be ok with the drywall compound where you will not be installing tile. I guess your gonna paint that?

You guessed right. There is one joint that happens to be right where my shower ends and the wall begins. If I have one row of tile over this joint, or even more rows of tile, could it be a problem?
