I bought a 5gal bucket of spackling about 8 months ago. I used about a 1/4 it on a project back then and when I opended today, it was brownish, milky, almost moldly looking.
How long does spackling last and/or how can you store it to keep it from getting so nasty?
Thanks

I've never seen spackling in a container larger than 1 qt. I assume what you have is joint compound. I also assume the lid wasn't tightly on during storage. You can scrape off any mud that looks moldy and mix and use what's left. A little water sprinkled on the top of the mud prior to storage may help.

i would actually throw it out, if it smells mouldy- itcan cause problems down the road. mould can stay dormant for years and then wreak havok.
if you want to save the drywall compound(which it must be as a 5 gal can)
put an inch of water and store in a cool dry area. when you are ready to use pour off water and mix and your good to go

Yup, toss is, for less than 10$ a bucket I wouldn't chance it.

Thanks for your replys.
I had the lid all the way on, or at least I thought. Next time I will try putting some water on top.
