I have purchased a home with a slate tile foyer. The slate is 1/2" thick and has been set in a wet bed (approximately 2 inches thick). It is very solid with no give or cracks. The slate foyer floor is even with the linoleum kitchen floor. I want to put new slate tile in the foyer and run it into the kitchen.

I have two questions:

1. I am planning on puting 1/4" hardibacker on the kitchen floor. Can the hardibacker be placed on the linoleum or should it be removed?

2. Is it possible to put hardibacker over the slate that has been set in a wet bed? I am hoping that I can clean and/or scuff the slate, apply thinset over it and set the hardibacker in the thinset. If that is possible, what would I use to clean the old slate with? If not possible, I would appreciate any advice given.

The lino has to be removed. If any 1/4" underlayments, luan, particle board or any other 1/4" underlayment, that has to go as well. You may also have to add a layer of plywood in the kitchen. All natural stone requires two layers of plywood, so if you dont have two layers totalling 1 1/8", you'll need to add more.

You cant put cement board over the existing slate. Cement board has to be mechanically attached to the subfloor with nails, screws etc. As to going over the slate, you may have some issues. If the slate has been sealed (and I'm sure it has) thinset will not bond to it. You would need to strip off all the sealer before any thinset may bond to it.

There will be an issue of the joint where the old vinyl floor meets the old slate floor. You may be able to put another layer of ply down once you remove the vinyl, and that may get you level with the old slate. If thats the case, ditra over the new plywood and old slate may work. You'll need some type of membrane where the two floors meet. Im assuming the old slate is in good condition, nothing loose, no cracking grout or slate, no flaking slate. And as I said before all sealer on the slate has to go.

Any other tile guys around? I'm not sure my idea will fly.
