I cannot figure out why my drain is leaking. I have never worked on a drain before. This thing is made of brass with a brass screw in castle type nut. The 2" PVC pipe has movement to it and will move up and down in the hole about 1/2" to 3/4" . IT has a rubber gasket that is about 1 inches deep with a tapered top. IT appears that as you tighten the castlenut the rubber gasket would be forced down to the bottom of the brass unit causing the seal to be made. I have tightened it all the way. I have tried it looser. The threads have no plumbers putting in them. As a matter of fact there is no plumbers putty anywhere with the exception to where the drain goes down through the fiberglass floor of the shower stall.
This is on a main level home and it is leaking into the ceiling of my sons bedroom.
Do you all have any ideas what would help.
1) is the pvc pipe supposed to have movement?
2) This unit is less than a year old. Do the rubber gaskets need replacing often?
3) SHould I put plumbers putty on the threads or anywhere in this type of drain?
Thanks in advance,
Robert

I sort of follow.
What is BELOW the rubber to keep the rubber from sliding down the 2 inch PVC as you tighten it? (Edit: I'm presuming that there is a flange at the bottom.)
Also, are you presuming the leak is from this connection? Have you looked? Maybe it is leaking from the plumber using a nutted 2 inch trap, rather than a glued-up one, and it is leaking from the trap nut.
