I have a cheap laminate (cherry stain) that has not withstood the demands of a large dog and children! Any ideas to repair the scratches? A helpful relative applied a clear varnish over...now the scratches really show up! Help! Can I sand this and refinish at all?

sand and refinish WHAT?? laminate isn't wood. you've got sawdust & glue (pressboard) pressed into the shape of a plank, and a photograph of wood glued to the top, with a clear coat on top. that's it. there's nothing to refinish. laminate is inexpensive (some say "disposable") and isn't meant to last. it can't be refinished, or even coated with anything (like polyurethane), cuz nothing will stick to it. sorry.

replacement is really the only fix.

Replacing with laminate will lead you right back to this same situation again shortly. If you like the look of wood, I'd check into engineered wood products, some of them come with some really durable surfaces.
