I am in the process of adding to and renovating an 1850's school house. Part of the new addition is a master bath with a 7' x 3' shower. The shower is on ALL exterior walls. I have insulated all wall cavaties with R-15 kraft faced insulation and R-38 for the ceiling. The exterior of the house is 3/4" ply with 3/4" rigid foam and sided with cedar shake with a 5" exposure. I have also wrapped all the pipes with insulation for added protection.

The room is very warm without any radiant heat as I have yet to install it. The only heat it gets is residual from our bedroom and the bathroom below it.

Anyway, I am now concerned about moisture. Being that I used kraft faced insulation. Should I remove the paper and install a breathable vapor barrior or should I just go right over the paper with the cement board?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Slit the kraft paper, and install a 4 mil poly sheeting over the studs, then put up your cement board. You want to keep any moisture/vapor from the shower away from the framing. Slit the kraft paper to avoid double vapor barrier.

Thanks for the advise. I knew not to have two vapor barriers I just wasn't sure how to go about it. Slitting the paper is a great idea.

Thanks again

mark, sounds like you like old houses, would love to see a pic of your bath addition when your finished-I'm renovating a 250+ farmhouse myself so I'm always interested in seeing other ideas for "older baths" thanks and good luck
