I will be painting a bunch of new interior doors snd the jambs as well. The mortise for the hinges are very inconsistent. Some of th hinges have a 1/8" gap around them. I would like to fill the gap before I paint. My idea was to leave the hinges on, tape the hinges, then fill the varying gap aroung the hinge with caulk, then paint. Is this a bad idea? Has anyone tried this before?
The doos were pre hung, pre primed 6 panel from h.d. The are very poor quality. Takes alot more work to make them look good :(
Thanks.......Larry

Boy that's horrible
I've had to fill in that space occasionally, and I've used wood putty and joint compound, never caulk
I can't see why it wouldn't work I guess...not off-hand anyway
I don't recall ever taping them as any overage on them wipes off easily
If you are spraying them and don't have the plastic hinges covers then I guess you'd be taping them anyway

I've run into this a lot
If painting by hand I use putty to fill the gap, specifically I like SWP's 66 glazing - not as oily as painter's putty.
I done a lot of spraying on new homes and usually remove the hinges [put them all in a bucket so you don't loose any] Spraying both coats on the doors and primer on the jambs, brushing the finish on the jambs minus the hinges. When it's all put back together that gaps around the hinges aren't very noticable because it's all been well painted.

Thks for the replies. I will probably leave the mortises alone. Sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone!
