About 5 years ago I had two Humidifiers installed with two new HVAC systems replaced in my home. This winter it seems like I had more static electricity than normal. Upon checking, both transformers (yes, both) are bad. The primary side of the transformers were open.
Both were installed the same way: spliced into the wire from the H (Heat) terminal of the circuit board to the motor. And the transformer was not mounted, just hanging by its wires.
Now I know that not mounting the transformer is sub-standard. Also, from I can tell so is this wiring method. I am not sure if this wiring method has lead to the transformer failure.
I believe the Humidifier should only run when the Heat and Fan is running, but is this the proper way to wire the transformer? The circuit board does have “HUM” terminals that supply 120 VAC when the heat comes on, but before the fan starts.
The Humidistat is mounted on the unit in the attic. I am considering moving it into the living area. It would take about 10 feet of thermostat wire.
I welcome advice on the correct wiring and humidistat placement.
Thanks.
