Greetings all, Great site

My question has several parts... I'm going to be replacing my existing island countertop with either granite tiles or ceramic tiles of some type. If I don't want to add any height to the island, should I just remove the top and start from the begining, with cement board over 3/4 inch plywood. Then put the tiles in a bed of mortor and grout after that. My island also has a breakfast nook overhang (10 inches ). Can I put granite tiles on an overhang like this or am I asking for cracks in the grout lines. Any body try something like this before with any kind of luck, I'd love to see some pics. I'd also like some ideas on how to deal with the outside edges of the surface, such as wood trim or maybe something with the tiles.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Thanks guys
