What range should the water temperature gauge read before the furnace burner kicks in, while the circulators are idle and running etc.? I see a range of 160-180. Here on Long Island I had trouble raising the temp on the main lavel of my house from 68, it went up one degree in two hours?

Temp sounds right, what's the boiler pressure?
Have you check to see if any air in the system?

The circulator should, to the best of my knowledge, come on right away. Therein could be your problem if that is not happening. Circulators can come on right away, unlike forced air systems that have delayed fan due to a windchill effect. With radiators, you experience no low temperature output windchill, therefore the water can circulate as soon as the fire lights up, so you can start garnering the benefits of heat in the house right away.
