I am planning to put a nice berber short loop carpet on my staircase. Few questions. I would rather not use tack strips, or padding. Kids moved out so stairs are rarely used. Is this ok? Can I just staple each tread and riser and maybe glue down? Also, I notice that berber frays a bit easier than other material. Other than binding (?????) is ther a clear glue or sealer to reduce the fraying of the carpet? Thanks for any advise. Mike

Check out this thread. The instructions relate to a runner rather than the whole step, but you can modify them to suit your purpose. When doing glue down carpets, there is a cushion back seam bond used to glue the seam edges together that would work well in your situation. There are also seam sealers that all carpet seams edges are supposed to be sealed with that would work. You can also seal the edges with a hot melt glue gun.
