I just had a 30" marble top bathroom vanity (with marble backspash) installed, and am concerned about the installation. Before I get the installer to come back to correct some problems, I want to be sure I understand how the installation should be done.

The marble backspash is attached to the wall, but the vanity itself is not attached to the backspash nor to the wall. Apparently either the wall or the floor is not straight and the vanity is against the wall at the floor, but sticks out from the wall about 3/8 of an inch. (I can slide something under the vanity legs on the front to lessen, and perhaps removethe gap entirely.)

But even so, shouldn't the backspash be attached to both the wall and the vanity? What product should be used for the purpose?

Thanks,
M

M, welcome to the forums! How did they attach the backsplash to the wall? Normally the entire unit is set in a bed of silicone on top of the vanity, which is levelled prior to installation of the top. May want to call them back. You paid for it, and you should be satisfied.

Larry,

Thanks for your reply.

The vanity came with the marble top already set on the base, with the backsplash separate. I don't know how the backsplash is attached to the wall, but I assume it will need to be detached from the wall in order for them to attach it to the marble top and then reattached to the wall.

I am asking them to come back and do whatever is necessary to fix it.

The top would be against the wall as close as possible and the backspash would just rest on the top rear of the marble top. No big deal that I can see. And as suggested, silicone is very good at adhering and sealing. And I would put it under the bottom edge of the backsplash to keep water from running under the joint. Then use finger and get rid of excess.

The vanity needs to be set with the top level, and if the wall is not plumb, there will be gaps there. These could be trimmed up with some moulding.

The backsplash should be set after the vanith is securely set and attached to the wall. The backsplash may just be attached to the wall with adhesive, and caulked at the junction with the top.
