I'm considering porcelain tile on my fireplace mantle, and would appreciate any input. The existing mantle is a solid rough sawn cedar beam 8"d X 4"h X 72"w. It is 14" above the firebox of a vented gas log fireplace. I would like to tile the front face, sides and top. Here are a few of my questions: 1) Any problems with heat (expansion/contraction) and the tile in this application? 2) Should I put 1/4" cbu on the beam prior to tiling, or could I thinset right onto the cedar beam? Thanks.

You should be able to tile directly to this if it isn't one of the following:

Chip board, cushioned vinyl flooring, particle boards of any type, luan plywood, OSB (Oriented Strand Board), tongue & groove planking.

Just make sure that the mantle is stripped of all paint. If it is stained, then sand it down some with a 240-400 grit paper.

Make sure the surface is really clean.
