After the first coat which is better to use--sand paper or steel wool.Plus what grade of either in between coats

Sand lightly after the first coat with 220. I rarely use steel wool anymore, especially on waterborne finishes, steel and water don't mix. I prefer Scotchbrite pads. They come in several grits and have worked well for me.
