I am about take out our 1950's tile from our small bathroom. The tile is ceramic on plaster and lathe. My one issues it the wall that abuts the outside wall which is entirely brick. I was at first thinking that the plaster was on wood framing (maybe just wood slates) and I was going to take the wall back to the framing. But I am concerned about the plaster just abutting the brick and the next step. If it is framing I know what to do but brick a litte unertain. Would it be just as easy to adhere the backerboard to the brick - then secure it with cement screws and go from their.

FWIW, I am going stone/ceramic tile for the shower portion that abuts the outside wall and beatboard/wainscoating for the room portion.

Thanks.

I question that you are describing your old construction correctly. I doubt that they would have installed tile over plaster, it likely would have been a mud/wirelath surface, then tile. Yes, tapcons can be used to secure duroc, but also use thinset as an adhesive.

Hi Bill,

Thanks. You are right. I opened up the walls and there was metal lathe and plaster behind the tiles. The lathe/plaster is set on what looks like 3/4'' x 1. and 3/4'' wood slats. Is that going to be enough to support the Dura Roc and bead board in the room and the Dura Rock/ wall tile in the shower. I wasn't planning on bulking up any framing b/c I didn't want to take the entire walls down just where the tile was.
