I just removed a two layer floor: one layer linoleum
and some kind of square tiles that were adhered with a black asphalt adhesive. The house was built in the late 60s.
The asphalt adhesive is thin and level and stuck down. Do
I have to remove it before tiling with a thinset mortar? That is
going to be difficult (days of work).
Thanks

The adhesive you describe is cutback adhesive. If that floor is from the sixties, its quite possible that the tile your removed and the adhesive both contain asbestos. Since the tile is already gone, no sense in worrying about it now. You need to try to remove as much of the adhesive as you possibly can. It should be mechanically removed, with a scraper. Hot water will also make the adhesive come up a little easier. The idea is to make sure that if it contains asbestos it doesnt get airborne. You dont have to get it perfect, just get off as much as you can. If you are uncomfortable with the fact that it may contain asbestos, you can have it tested and or hire a professional to do this. There are thinsets that can be used over cutback adhesive. They'll say so right on the bag. Ive assumed this is on a concrete slab, if not post back with the details.
