My daughter has a problem with her thermostat. She has a heat pump with inside emergency heat (furnace) The thermostat doesn't work properly, for the heat to be on the fan has to be in the on position and the selection switch turned to off. If it is turned to heat and the fan to auto the a/c and the heat will be on at the same time. The thermostat is a RHEEM class 2 30 volt max LR1620 Could someone please help.

Are you sure???????? With a heat pump and it calls for heat the outdoor unit runs in heat mode. If it cant keep up then some of the electric elements will come on. Feel the big copper line when all is on. if its warm to hot. then is all OK. Check it all out before you get a new tstat.

I agree with Ed. You're probably getting power from g to y at the stat. It sounds as if it's miswired.

I checked the T-stat it seemed to be wired correctly (color code) could it be wired wrong outside? I went over to check it yesterday , it was froze up out side the heat switch was off the fan was in the on position, Iturned it to auto and it shut down and thawed. What causes the freeze up. So you all think that I will be wasting my time and money on a new T stat?
Thanks to all

For right now yes. Lets find out what dont work first.
it was froze up out side the heat switch was off the fan was in the on position, Iturned it to auto and it shut down and thawed. What causes the freeze up.
Yes they freeze up outside when it gets cold. Then they have to go into a defrost.
lets start over ------tstat set for heat and calling, fan set in auto. What do you get what runs

Out of the box here. I think at first you have some electric heat come on with the pump. Then the electric cuts off and just the pump is on. Now if it is low on freon not much heat will come out. Also if cold out side very low heat can come out of the ducts with the pump running. Is the unit out side running ??? Is the big copper line warm to hot at the unit???

Then its working as it should. Most of the time it takes like 1o drop and some of the electric should come on to help out.We try to tell people with the heat pump . if you want 72o set it and let it alone. But dont go by are feel the air at a register. The other thing that will come next here is she will call and say the outdoor unit is on fire.......
When the weather is just right and the unit goes into defrost. Steam will come up off it and look like smoke.

ED with the Tstat in the auto and the heat positions ,at first heat comes out and all is good but it want kick off. Of course I'm not there I just have to go by what I'm told but I was there yesterday and the heat wouldn't kick off automatically. I had to turn the heat switch off and leave the fan switch on auto. Thanks again.

Are you talking about the outside unit?

Ed is talking about the air handler inside the house. Turn the power off to the system at the circuit breaker and open the blower door. Now look for the circuit board inside the air handler and lolcate the fuse on the board. Pull it and check to see if the fuse is blown.
