Hello all:
Newguy with a Trane XL1000, 1993 model, just had contactor replaced two weeks ago, and a new digital thermostat a week ago. New contactor is burnt just like the old one, only seems to be arching when emergency heat bank on. Currently running at 70 degrees with outside temp at single digits. Contactor is not buzzing at lower setting. Sequencers on both banks replaced last winter, and blower cleaned, system checked then. Buddy in hvac biz installed the new contactor 2 weeks ago, and checked wiring conections and system then. What could cause the contactor to fry so fast, bad emergency heat bank, or what? Puzzled. Any help would be much appreciated.

Why is the EME on??? Why does it chatter then. Check the new tstat.

Look for a bad wire in the t-stat circuit causing a voltage drop. The contactor is having trouble staying pulled in. I've had contactors that wouldn't pull in, but would stay pulled in if you pushed 'em closed. You'll get 24 volts at the wires when unhooked fron the contactor during a call, but the voltage will drop when hooked up.
Problem could be the stat or a bad wire or connection anywhere in the controls circuit.
