I picked up a couple trowls at a yard sale this weekend for practically nothing but a few of them have left over mortar and thinset on them. Is there something I can soak them it to clean this off. I plan on trying to use then this weekend to tile my bathroom floor, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

A belt sander will work if you can keep the trowel from flying around when the belt hits it.

A wire wheel on a fast drill or bench grinder may do the trick. It won't hurt the trowel at all. Always brush toward the edge of the trowel.
