I recently installed an ungagued slate floor in a kitchen and entry area. The pieces were all a variety of shapes and sizes. I tried to lay a thick set of thinset and back buttered some of the tiles but the finished product has some lippage. How best can I reduce the amount of lippage? Should I chisel the sides and corners? Can I grind the slate down with a tool? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

They make a medium bed mortar for this type application. I know its to late for that know but next time you'll know this. The medium bed mortar supports the tile better and it doesnt sink like it did in the thinset. Thinset is for 1/4" or less. Anything more than that and you need the medium.

How much lippage are we talking about? How big are the grout joints?

Grinding it down wont help as the ungauged stuff will shear off in layers and the process will loosen more layers than what you want to remove. I dont know of a sure fire fix.
