I have noticed lately that alot of kitchens have cabinets creating a built in desk area. We want to add a desk area to our kitchen; we want it to match our exsisting cabinets (or at least look good together). We have a fairly simple cabinet door that is maple. Oddly enough, the problem I have found is NOT matching my cabinets, but to actually find cabinets that we can use for a desk. The problem is that cabinets are too tall for a desk area (i don't know the exact heights, but can see an obvious height issue). We have a limited budget (my husband will be installing this), and I was hoping to be able to use stock cabinets. I went to HOme Depot and looked at their stock cabinets, but they are all too tall. When i spoke to the employee in that section she said the only way to have a desk is to have custom cabinetry...then gave me a quote of $1,100-$1,300!!! That is WAY over my budget! I have several questions:
Does anyone know of where I could buy stock cabinets that would work for a desk?
Has anyone installed this in their kitchen (have this in their kitchen)? Where did you buy it? Do you have some pictures, etc.?
Can my husband alter (cut) stock cabinets to make them the correct height?
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, PLEASE pass them along to me!!! I can gladly provide pictures of my kitchen. I have spent the last 3 days straight searching on line, and just can't seem to find anything! Even if you can just direct me to some good websites it would be much appreciated!!! Thank-you all so much! :)

Vanity file drawer cabinets are used to build matching desk areas in kitchens. Vanity knee space drawer or computer tray can be installed to accommodate a keyboard.

Shop around. Give your small independent kitchen dealer an opportunity to quote. You will find that most are competitively priced and very knowledgeable.

As Twelvepole stated above, a desk is very possible. Find a knowledgable person(if possible) at your local home center and have them check their catalogs. As stated above two file drawer units could be used as a stand alone desk, or one drawer unit and a top could be attached to end of an existing cabinet. Just remember, the home centers do not have everything available on display. Most cabinet systems have to be ordered. Be prepared for a long delivery time. They are manufactured after the order is placed. Good luck with your project.

Kraftmaid has a website which might be of some help.
