What is the price range for a 5 ton XL16i heat pump? I have a 5t 14i but like the 2 stage or 2 compressor option. Everything is under 2 yrs old

i had a trane 4.50 ton xl16i installed last november, new duct work, returns, (redid ducts from crawl space to attic cause i added 2 new rooms), also got the 'clean air' thingy, thermostat, all new. took the 2 guys 4 days to do it all, they did a superb job!!!

we r extremely happy with everything

cost was 11,000.00......

i gave the 2 guys that installed/did all the work a 200.00/each 'bonus'.
their work was clean, detailed, did it like it was their own homes.

for my part,it was a cheap investment->no more breakdowns with old heat pump unit, etc.

You might check there . The XL16i has a 2 stage compressor in it. That just onloads one cylinder for one stage and still runs at the same speed.
The XL19i has two compressors in it.

Do you always get the full tonnage or does it start out at one output then high output when needed.

Can you give me a price range for the outside unit? 5 ton heat pump? My local trane rep is a stick. I'm either going to upgrade to a 16i or spend $1200 on an aprilaire whole house dehumidifier. Just weighing options. My current unit is a 5 ton 14i.

I've got new duct work and AH I just want to replace the 14i with a 16i. Mine was about 7800 for a 5 ton xl14i, vs ah, ditital t'stat, new duct work in attic, remove old duct in crawlspace, new uv lamp

harveje Why would you pull the duct work out of the crawlspace and put a heat and cool duct up in the attic????

I could not get under the house. I've grown some in the last 15 yrs...and it seems that the floor vents are always in the way of something.

I just received a quote this morning for a 2 ton XL16i for $14372. (This was after an initial quote of $16570 with the dual compressor 19i.) That includes all equipment inside and out and a Honeywell 3 zone system. (plus the media air cleaner and removing the existing baseboard. My backup system is a woodstove that is currently my main source of heat.) My house is 2600 sq ft with lots of different levels (its a post and beam that was built in stages over 10 years about 20 years ago.) I keep seeing all these posts talking about 4 and 5 tons and I'm getting worried that 2 ton is too small! Does anyone know how the tons affects how it works? Does the $14372 sound reasonable?

Greg...I have approx 1,500 square foot brick rancher built in 1961 that I had walls insulated with expanding foam and thermial windows installed. January 2006 I had an XL16I 3 ton heat pump installed with a 2 stage 80% gas furnace for aux / backup heat. Had everything moved to attic so all new duct work had to be installed, gas line, electrical etc. Price was $10,500 for everything including remove / cleanup from old system. I'm also located in NC.

what happens if the ton sizing is too small? when I asked him why only 2 tons he said he wasn't counting hallways because the hallways would have returns only.

What part of NC are you in and if you are near Asheville, which contractor did you use?

I've actually received several bids with tons ranging from 2 to 4. Each of these contractors (very reputable companies all) measured while they were here. 14 seer single stage single zone systems ranging from $9800 to a Trane 14 seer 2 zone at $11500 to a Goodman 14 seer 3 zone at $14700 and then the Trane xl16i I mentioned at $14372. I know everything is more expensive up here in the mountains but this is crazy.

I've been doing a lot of reading online about oversizing but not seeing anything on undersizing. Heat is more essential here and cooling is minor.

Im sorry I just cant see where you would get a bid for a 2 ton to a 4 ton for the same home. Some one here is way way off. Best buy is the Trane Xl15i for now stay away from the R410a freon its cost it to to high.
