I live in Eastern CT, and understand that building code requires all basement power outlets to be GFCI.

I have just been advised that when installing an alarm panel it should be off a non-GFCI outlet. Is this correct? As it is against code I want to make sure it is indeed required.

Thanks.

It would be recommended not to be on a GFCI because something could trip the breaker and power down your system.

This is from the N.E.C.

Exception No. 3 to (5): A receptacle supplying only a permanently installed fire alarm or burglar alarm system shall not be required to have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection.

SAying this, you do not need GFCI receptacle for your alarm system. Check with your local code to be sure, but the National Electric Code says you don't.

As long as you supply the alarm box with a single receptacle it does not need to be GFCI protected. The single recep. will only allow the alarm box to be plugged into it. We do the same for sump pumps, hot water heaters and other equipment usually located in a basement that should not be GFCI protected.

Also, the GFCI rule does not apply to finished areas in a basement.
