Have a small carrier air condition/heat pump used for heating/cooling the upstairs in a small home. When the temp gets near 32 degrees, and there is moisture in the air, ice forms on the coils and heater fails. Solution is to change thermostat from heat to cool and reduce temp setting. Unit runs and ice melts. Otherwise the unit operates perfectly. Is that the best solution?

Check the defrost control. Sounds like thats bad. It should defrost by itself.

Thanks. I had heard that suggestion before. I guess we will call a repair man. We have had the initial installer out before who could not find anything wrong. However, a civil engineering friend told us how to blow off the ice manually.
