I have an entryway, powder room, family room and back entry way all on one level. The front entryway is wood floor, the powder room is linoleum, the family room is berber carpet, the fireplace is tiled in front of it and the back entryway is another color of linoleum. Everything is done tastefully and matches etc. I was thinking of putting floor tile in this whole area. It would run continous from the front to the back door to the fireplace and powder room and the entire family room. I would probably put a rug in the family room on top of the tile. Has anyone ever put this much tile down. Is it too much to look at? I'm thinking of maintenance and continuity.

You are on a ceramic and stone forum here. If I could have it my way my whole house would be covered with tile inside and out floors walls and ceiling. Just kidding. I dont think this would be to much - just my opinion. Its really a matter of personal taste. All the areas of a house that you mention are often done in ceramic or stone so nothing out of the ordinary here. If you like the look then go for it.

I agree. The trend today is toward hard surfaces and my personal choice is tile with area or throw rugs. I've installed carpet for years and there isn't much job security in saying it, but I want to pull all my carpet out and tile the whole place.

I would recommend a good pair of knee pads and a back brace. Kneeling on ceramic will put a number on your knees.

Thanks for the replies. Acres of tile sounds like a cool thing. I hear ya on the knee pads. So, this level of the house has a concrete base with a few cracks and low spots. I'm assuming after tearing out all the old floor material a good floor leveler should be poured on these low spots and then I can tile right on top of that and the concrete?

I would install a crack isolation membrane over the whole floor after it's leveled.

it might be too late for my opinion, but here it is anyway:
right now, i think you have too many different types of flooring, but what you're proposing would be too much tile. maybe in a beach house somewhere, it'd be okay, but for me, that's too much cold tile. i think of tile as the flooring for wet areas like kitchens, laundry rooms, entryways, bathrooms. not family rooms. so how about leaving (or replacing) the carpeting in the family room and just putting the tile in the other areas? it'd be warmer in the room you want to settle down in to watch TV, and feel warm in. plus, for sound, a carpeted room would be better. and you'd have a little more visual & textural interest than just having tile everywhere.
my 2 cents.

You have to learn to love tile more. I didnt know there was any other kind of flooring.
