We are 90% sold on painting over our laminate counters and laying granite tile on the countertop. I have done a good amoutn of research on both and am aware of the "proper" instal instruction but I;m still going to ask - My question is two fold: 1) can I just lay the tile ontop of my current counter? 2) if not can I just lay the backer board to the current counter and tile on that?
As you can tell I'm trying to get out of ripping the current counter out. We are doing it as the last improvment before we put or condo on the market so the quickets and cheapest solution with out making it look bad is what we are after...

Building on top of existing counter will increase the height. Is this acceptable?

Ohhhh, never thought of that Wirepuller38!
I know the range is slightly higher then the counter top - I know I can't get away with the counter, backer board and tile - if I could just lay tile on the exsiting counter I think I could get away with it.
I guess I should stop being lazy and do it right - consider it practice for the new place. It's just that I don't have the space or tools to cut allot of plywood and backer board. I would have to do it outside on my little (8X9) porch and it's january in new enlgand...

I suggest that if you want a tile countertop, that you do it the right way. That would mean getting rid of the laminate countertop and starting from scratch. The new owners of your condo will appreciate the fact that you did a good job and that they'll have a countertop that will last many years to come.

OK, I checked last night - looks liek if I did it on top of the counter it will be higher then the stove. Not by much though, maybe a quarter inch - need to check if the stove has those adjustabel feet like the fridge and if so if it will go high enough...
Anyone ever install the tile ontop of the laminte counter? Did it hold? Not last long? Thoughts, tips, a slap and "stop being lazy" reply? :-)
thanks in advance...
