My daughter is having a room addition put on, which results in the side entry door now connecting to the new room. They talked to the contractor about what kind of door to order. He said the plans only specified a 20 minute fire code. For some reason I was under the impression that 90 minutes or 2 hours was required.

Anyone know what the code is ( San Diego, CA).

Thanks.

Yes, the side wall of the garage that now is adjacent to the new room is being upgraded for both seismic ( shear wall ) and fire code purposes.

Only the local code people can tell you what fire rating the door must have..

Each jurisdiction usually has more restrictive requirements than the adopted code(s) and they range from city to city. However, I suspect that San Diego has adopted the same code (California Building Code) we use up in Northern California (Bay Area). Assuming we take the CBC as written, a 20 min. door is acceptable between the house and the garage. Off the top of my head, I recall this is an exception to the standard 1-hour separation between occupancy group “R3” and occupancy group “U” rule and is at the discretion of the building official. However, if the new room is a bedroom and the side entrance is a garage, most jurisdictions up here will not allow an opening at all between a bedroom and a garage. SD might allow it if a 2-hour separation is provided, just a guess, I'm not sure. I’d suggest looking at the plans yourself and checking with the building dept.

Good Luck,
