We are planning an addition that has me thinking about moving our existing stairs to the basement.
Anyone know how much floor space is required on the main level for stairs going down?
Or are there any stair calculators for that type of info?

The ideal step height is 7 inches. Measure the distance from the basement floor to the floor above and divide by 7. This gives the number of steps. The step depth(front to back of step) should be 11-12 inches. Multiply this number by the number of steps to get the long dimension of the stairwell. Hope this helps.

Check local building codes. They rule!

Did you understand what wirepuller38 was saying? If you are still having problems let me know and I can go through it step by step with you, all I'll need to know right away is the measurement from the top of the finished main floor to the basement floor.
