can the molded 6-panel bifold doors be trimmed on the sides to fit an opening? the opening is 47inch, could i buy two 24 in. bifolds and trim them to fit? i know i could on the solid wood louvered door, but i would like to use the panel type.

You can do it if you take 1/8" off each edge of all 4 panels. It is best to use a table saw for this type operation as keeping a straight line would be next to impossible by hand. Remove all the hardware and mark the doors so you can match them to the original mate. Run each panel through the saw set at 11 7/8". Then reset the saw to 11 3/4" and run the opposite edge through. The panels should equal 47". You may want to cheat a little to take into consideration the surface mounted hinges, etc that may affect the closure of the doors.
