Decorating and Design - What to do with this ceiling?

My wife and I are re-doing our master bedroom. We really want to do something with the ceiling but just don't know what to do becasue of the slope. I wanted a different color to set it apart. I also wanted to add some sort of trim but with the slope I cant do much (that I know of). Should I paint the flat part and the sloped part the ceiling color, or paint the sloped part like the walls and then paint the flat part of the ceiling different? Any other ideas to touch up this ceiling?

Painting the sloped part of ceiling the same as the walls would tend to take away from it's architectural significance. I do not think that the construction (southwestern?) style and the irregular ceiling would benefit from crown or other moldings. If the stark white ceilings are bugging you, then go with a couple shades lighter than the wall paint. This tends to give you the illusion of a higher ceiling. While you are at it, paint the back wall of the niches, the lighter color to showcase your accessories.

does the ceiling (sloped or flat) have the same texture as the walls, or is it different?

assuming the texture is all the same:

as stated in your plans, by painting the different planes in different colors, you will actually be accentuating the HORIZONTAL line where the different colors meet, which is the exact opposite of what you're wanting to accomplish. you want to accentuate the dramatic height of this room, but no one's going to miss it. it's really in your face & not something that you need to work hard at. i would either paint the vertical walls one color, and the slopes & flat ceiling areas a lighter or darker version of the same color, or i'd paint it all the same. either way, you're downplaying (or eliminating) the lines of contrast and your eye will naturally be drawn up to those great soaring ceilings.

that said, don't forget that the focal point of any bedroom is supposed to be the bed. with ceilings like that, you can go with a very dramatic large scale bed, such as a 4-poster or canopy-type or a very high headboard & footboard.

focus your decorating efforts lower. and no trim.
