My son had the nylon gears "chew up" on his Chamberlain garage door opener. We think the bottom of the garage door had frozen shut in our cold climate and that took care of the gears when it was activated. I installed new gears for him and then without the chain on followed the directions. The drive sprocket went one way and then the other. the garage door opener is about 5-6 years old.

I do not know if I disturbed something in installing these gears? Or if there was something that failed on this garage door opener in the first place that caused these gears to "chew up".

You need to check the RPM sensor (it is located on the end of the motor shaft) make sure it is clean and plugged in
