Once squirrels are in attic, trapping is the most effective control. Squirrels are just as scared of you as you are of them. If in doubt, call an exterminator. The best control for squirrels in the attic is exclusion. Once you get squirrels out and are sure there are no babies, seal all gaps and openings in the structure.

Hi Alexnc,
You've already gotten some good advice. Live trapping is probably the best way to get them out. You can hire a pro who should come to check the traps at least every 12 hours or you can do it yourself. Once they are removed you MUST have every inch of electrical wiring checked by a certified electrician. My neighbor's house burned down because of the squirrels in the attic that chewed the wires. Please read this post.

I would never underestimate the actions of wild animal that is cornered, but I don't see them actively attacking you. However, I've heard some crazy stories about squirels attacking dogs, etc. Do your research. Find out how they gained entry. Find out if they live there permenantly, or just nest there. Perform Internet searches on lethel or non-lethel methods to rid your home of these wild animals. Whatever you're comfortable with.
Firstly, identify the method in which they are coming and going. You need to either hire a professional, or trap them yourself and remove them. I skip to the next step like the first one was easy. (Disclaimer-check your local laws before trapping, blah, blah) Once they are removed, and you are sure of this, find and plug the opening they used to get in.
Do not fool yourself into using deterrants such as mothballs, or products made to get rid of squirrels. They do not work. Physical removal of the wild animal is the only option. If you plan on live trapping and relocating, take them far, far away (+5 miles).

You can use Raid fumigators to both drive the animals out and find the holes, just look where the smoke is going.
Do it in the hottest part of the day when they are less likely to be at home
