I have green 50's tile in my bathroom.

I have a fish rug w/ green and blue and coral. I have a fish theme, white shower curtain. White walls seems too "white" and sterile.

Any ideas? http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c226/RuthieDicken/P1160018.jpg

The color is turquoise. What hues of blue, green, and coral do you have. Right now all colors with yellow undertones are hot. Depending on whether you want the turquoise to stand out or blend in, you can paint walls coral (I prefer terra cotta as it is softer), soft yellow, a light bluey green or greeny blue. By painting walls the same or lighter hue of the turquoise, it will not stand out as much if it's bothering you.

For your info, that color is once again popular, especially in cottage beach decor. Crispy white towels and trim (if trim is painted) would set off your color scheme as accents. As you say, " White walls seems too "white" and sterile."

is this a kids bathroom? or master or hall bath? do you live by the water/ocean/beach? what's the decor in the rest of the house?

It's a kids bathroom. I don't live near a coast, but the midwest. I'm glad that color is coming back in style. We bought a small can of light lavender, but it looked awful next to the green. I think I will try the light yellow next.

Also, the walls are "knock-down". I hired a guy to smooth out the walls w/ a skim-coat, but he talked me into "knock-down". I didn't really understand what he meant. I hate the knock-down, but I'm not paying another fortune to fix it. He told me it's all the rage on the west coast. I don't know.

It's really a gorgeous tile, even though it's 50 years old. Thanks so much for your ideas!

I have that tile in my bathroom on the walls and the tub. vanity, toilet have been replaced with white. my mother in law is absessed with purple and it actually looks good on the walls. its a light purple but seems to flow well. the linoleum is a white with purple accents i got form home depot for like $30.

most of the new homes around here have the knockdown texture, too. i like it better than the bumps they used to use.

i think i'd go with a pastel version of the tile color. it'll seem watery & will actually put less contrast on the tile than using a completely different color would. less contrast = less noticed.

Oh, Annette, I think I really like that idea. I'll go find some colors that are lighter than that turquoise. Thanks!

To get the 'just right' hue, bring home paint chips and study in natural and artificial light. When you think you decided upon a couple, get a sample of paint and bring home and paint on walls next to tile and study. There are so many beautiful hues available that will work with that beautiful tile.
