I just started finishing my basement. Where the perimeter partition wall will run along the poured foundation wall and the floor joists above run parallel, I'll install cross blocking. However; in two places, HVAC ducting has been installed and it is impossible to put any cross blocking between the joists for about 5' of the two 12' walls. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Double the top plate across this 5 ft. span and you should be fine.

I'd prefer not to double the top plate. Both foundation walls also have a hopper window under the sill plate (english basement) in this area. I'd like a smooth transition when I drywall the ceiling.

Also, at the end of one wall there is an I-Beam before the foundation turns for a bump out. So the partition wall will need to step down under the I-Beam before attaching to the perpendicular partition wall.

Could I use a couple of brackets to attached the top plate to the sill plate?

Thanks.
