What causes the outside of the heat pump to freeze up with the heat on? The outside air temp is about 40. I have the thermostat set at 70.

Because the outside unit in running like a AC right now. to give you heat inside. When there is a build up of ice on it . The unit should go into a defrost for you. When it does . You can see smoke. But its not smoke it will be just steam is all off the unit

Is this a problem, is it normal? I looked around the neighborhood and all the other units are not froze.

Ok Id say hold off till tomorrow. if it dont go into defrost call a tech to check out the defrost board on your unit then. Can be the board the timer or the sensors.
