Hello, I am having problems with my Payne PH12 Outside PF1 Inside heat pump/air exchanger unit.
I have looked through many of the heat pump posts and could not seem to find anything that seemed to fit my problem.
Background: It has been at or below freezing here in North Texas for 3+ days now and the heater just did not seem to want to keep up. I moved the tstat to EM heat with no results. Yesterday morning the house was cool with the unit blowing cool air. I left the unit on EM all day and when I arrived hoe from work the house was cold inside.
I have looked the inside and outside units over from top to bottom and inside any panels I could easily remove. I have no idea what I am looking at and could not tell if anything was wrong So I began my internet search for help.
I did find the outside unit had half of the exterior covered in ice (poured warm water over to remove) the ?condensor? appeared to have a ring of ice built up around the lower portion (may not be the condesnor = black cylinder sitting on bottom inside coils), poured warm warter on this also to remove ice - no help.
I have checked the breakers and they seem to be ok, no tripping. I have also check the small 5amp fuse under the upper panel on the interior unit - it is ok.
I am stumped and have no ides where to look next. I have a feeling this may be something simple, but don't know what to look for or what to test/check.
I am very mechanically inclined and can fix most things if I know the problem and how to do it.
ANY HELP would be appreciated

Lets start here . Do you have the wire schematic?????
All of the electric elements should have come on for you. When you went over to the EME. Some tstat say AUX. So with a meter or amprobe why didnt they come on do they get 220V did their controls get 24V from the tstat?????

You have a lot of ifs ifs here to run down

Ed, thanks for the reply, I got tired of fumbling around and asked a neighbor that has HVAC experience to look at it. Turns out it was all electrical.

1 - the heating elements were not connected so no Emergency Heat was available.
2 - There was exposed wires on the control wire from the int. unit to the HP that I did not see in the dark.
3 - We had to manually force defrost to get things back in line also.

So I now know a lot more about my system and know what I am looking at as I was shown and taught the different components and what they do in the system.

Right now sitting in a warm cozy home with renewed knowledge.

Thanks Again

Tom

ragergt,
The black cyllinder sitting in the middle of the coils is the compressor. The heart of the system. You could have several probs. if your cond. coil is freezing up, and your emerg. heat not working. You might want to see if you can find a good pro, before it freezes up completely, or you do.
