Lighting, Light Fixtures, Ceiling and Exhaust Fans - Remove Ceiling Fan/light combo & Replace with Light Fixture

I am replacing a ceiling fan. I want to remove the ceiling fan/light combo and replace it with only a light fixture.

The problem that I am having is that I have three black wires, three white wires and two green wires coming from the outlet box.

The light fixture has motion detection, and I has a receptacle that only support one of the three black wires, one of the three white wires, and one ground. Should I simply use one wire per color group and cap the rest?

No. That would get you nowhere.

You will have to pigtail and connect as appropriate to the new receptacle or light or whatever you have.

How were the wires connected to the old fan and light?

The white wire from the fan was connected to the white in outlet box, the black wire from fan connected to black wire in outlet box, and the ground connected to ground.

What about the other two black wires, the other two white wires, and the other ground wire? How were they connected?

All three white wires from the outlet box are connected together. Likewise, all three black wires are spliced together. The fan wires were simply connected to the applicable color set of three wires.

Then do the same.

The new light fixture has a receptacle that will only allow one wire connection per wire color. That is why I asked if I should cap the other two white wires and the other two black wires and simply connect the one wire per color to the receptacle.

You will have to pigtail the connections. If you remove the other wires something else in the house and possibly this light won't work, as I told in post #2.
