We have a ten year old JVC 27" direct view tube TV with an issue. After about 10 minutes, the picture collapses to a single horizontal line across the center of the tube. Shutting the power off for a moment restores the full picture for another few minutes. Also, it seems, a gentle slap on the side of the cabinet can restore the picture. Sometimes the picture appears across 75% of the screen with thin orange lines throughout.
Even though replacement 27" models are available for about $250, it is not our main TV and money is tight this month. We'd prefer it repaired for a reasonable cost. Any ideas about the problem and its solution?
Thanks, as always.

Talk to a local repair shop. Sounds like a possible cold solder joint. I would guess less than $100.

Throw it in the dumpster.
Could be a lot of things wrong with it, all of which are probably more expensive to fix then the TV is worth.
If you are lucky, it's a bad solder like joed said, but not likely.
