Just recently ice started forming on the outside of my heat pump compressor. The temp inside the house is staying around 72 and working properly. The fan on the outside unit is working and only problem is with the ice forming on the outside unit. What is causing this and what can be done to remedy the problem?

Just let it alone . Didnt they tell you that the unit can and will go into defrost some times. To melt the ice off. Also if the RH and the temp is just right at the time it can look like smoke is comeing off the condenser unit outside. It will be steam. Now on some units the fan out side will stop the compressor will run. This will be in the AC mode and the blower inside will come on with some of the electric elements on so it dont blow cold air. This is all in the defrost mode. Read any paper work you got with the unit. AND a new filter every 30 to 90 days not over a MERV 5
