Is there a general guideline to follow in regards to scale when chosing artwork to hang above a sofa? I found a print I love and taped newspaper to the exact size above the sofa. Looks good to me but I'm wondering if there is a rule of thumb to follow? Might be too large...

You don't want it to extend beyond the ends of the couch. It should be at least 2/3 the length of the couch. And, it should not be hung higher than 8" above the back of the couch. Those are just general rules of thumb. Horizontal pieces tend to work better than vertical because of the need to fulfill the width in order to unify the vignette.
