Decorating and Design - Kitchen Cabinet Hardware Question

My wife and I have just purchased our first home. It came with kitchen cabinets that are a "golden oak" color. The light fixtures in the kitchen have an oiled bronze finish. The countertop is a greyish color.
We would like to install knobs and pulls on the cabinets and drawers. Is there a guideline for what color the hardware should be? Should it match the lights? Would a darker knob be better then a silver color if the appliances are black?

There is no rule etched in granite for cabinet hardware selection. Some select all knobs. Some all pulls. Some put knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. Some vice versa.

There is also no rule that all metals have to match. Brushed nickel and pewter are popular because they look good with stainless sinks and appliances. Oiled bronze is also popular in cabinet hardware and lighting fixtures. The golden tones would go well with the golden oak cabinets and the black tones would go well with black appliances. The sink and faucet finish tend to be the most significant factor in determining finish. For instance, with stainless steel sink and faucet and gray counter, a brushed stainless knob would likely look better.

Pick up one of each and bring home and study under natural and artificial light to see how each appears with cabinets, counter, and appliances. Keep in mind, too, the view from which you will primarily be seeing the cabinet hardware. This will likely be up close and personal while working. Too, the overhead light fixture will be above the range of vision at this point. Once you have made your decision, then you can return the knob that you decided against and purchase the rest of the ones you selected.
