Someone suggested we could get a "horizontal" HVAC unit that would fit within our crawl space and free up room in the finished part of our basement where the current HVAC is located.
Are these types of HVAC units commonly used? Any special considerations or tips for using them?

Accessibility to the unit for changing filters would be an issue. Other considerations would be moisture and ventilation issues in the crawl space.
Other: Age and efficiency of existing unit. Replacement cost. Actual additional space gained in basement area. Building codes?

The air handler for my heat pump is located in my crawl space. Mine is set on blocks but they can also hang from the floor joists. The fresh air return is ducted into the house - that is where the filter goes [easy access] The installation company thought the craw space was the best place for the unit - so did the other bids that were for a split system. Often air handles are installed in attics to free up room.

We install them all the time in crawl space. Like said use a filter grill for the return That way you dont have to go down there to put a new filter in. Also we cut two small outlets and one return in the duct down there. This way you have a warm floor and dry in the summer no outside vents to the crawl space. Seal any that you have there
