I bought furniture for our den. The sofa is a sectional dark sage green. The carpet is tan. There is also a brown leather recliner and a brown game table with 4 chairs. The fireplace is stone. I cannot figure our what color to paint the walls? Do I go with a tan like the carpet or a sage green like the sofa. I plan on hanging woven shades on the windows. Please help...

you could go with either the tan or sage, if you want it to be fairly bland. to add a smidge more interest & contrast, use a darker shade of the tan or sage.

but.............i would suggest you introduce another color, like cinnamon or burgundy or gold or chocolate! think autumn leaves. you can mix & match any colors that you see out your window in the fall.

in my previous home, we had beige berber carpet, an olive sofa, honey wheat (gold) walls & burgundy curtains that had a floral/grapevine design in it with all the other colors used. i accented with burgundy. and the next room was the kitchen which had burgundy walls (actually wallpaper that was very similar to the floral/grape curtains) to the 2 rooms tied together wonderfully. everyone loved the room. it was warm & colorful but very earth-toney.

i would suggest you find a few more items for the room before you paint. you only have the sofa. look for curtains or an area rug or a painting or something that will have more colors you can use for your color scheme. tan & sage just aren't enough to work with, imo.

In addition to finding a rug, painting, accessory, etc. that has your sage and tan and other colors from which you can be inspired for wall colors, study the stone in your fireplace. You may discover some gold, rust, red, or other color that can be your inspiration for wall color. Sage green is a hot color. It has yellow undertones as do most of the popular colors today. The yellows range from pale yellow and on into the rich golds. A rich red hue would be excellent for accessories and accents.
