There are two cables coming into my box--each has one white wire, one black and one copper. In addition, one of the cables also has a red wire. The switch that is currently in place is connected to one of the black wires and to the red wire. The white wires are twisted together and capped off. What do I do with the red wire when I install my new switch/outlet combo?

before doing any electrical work in your home, you should buy a book in residential wiring and read, and understand it.

Connect the red and black wires to the new switch gold screws. Conenct a white wire to the silver screw and the other white wires nthe box. Connect a bare or greeen wire to the bare wires nthe box and the green ground screw.

If the receptacle is switched and you want it one always then swap the red black wires.
