we have a standard washer and dryer, along with a septic tank system. i have been told that the fibers freom the washer will clog up the septic system and that i should install an expensive lint trap into the washer drain line. any thoughts??

Id run the washer out on its own drain field. Its the soap that will do you in in the septic tank and field.

Some tips I have heard of is to reduce the number of loads done in a day (one is ideal). Standard washers use a TON of water, so you don't want to overload the septic with upwards of 100+ gallons in a short period of time. Also NO BLEACH - kills the happy enzymes that break down the waste, and be sure to use septic-friendly detergents.
Same applies do dishwashers.
I have never heard of the lint thing but it makes some sense.

I second using a seperate drain field for the washer. Codes vary on what they will let you do. Here in my county, running wash water on the ground is allowed [rural only] providing there is no creek nearby. In the city you need a short section of drain field.
