I am installing IC rated can lights in the ceiling of my home. I have a single story house with an open attic. Since I use my attic for storage, I plan on making a plywood box to cover the backside of the recessed lights so that they will not be bumped or hit when we are removing items from the attic space. Is this okay and if so, how big do these boxes need to be? and should I drill venting holes in the side of the boxes?

I would recommend air-tight fixtures that are also IC rated. There should be 12"+ of insulation in the attic, so I would not be too concerned about bumping the fixtures, but it is make you feel better, build the boxes. Air holes not needed.
