Ok , I understand 3 and 4 way switches, But this one has got me beat. The previous owner swears it worked , but I dont see how. 2nd floor has three bedrooms in a hallway, each bedroom has a switch outside for the hallway light, and there is another switch at the base of the stairs, In essence creating a 5 way circuit. the 1st floor switch has no effect , and the center bedroom switch has no effect. I have no idea how to approach this. I assume it to be a 4 way setup with an extra 4way switch thrown in the mix?

It would be a 4-way with more 4-ways in the middle.

this should have 2 3-way switches with 3 4-way switches connected to the travelers in between the 3-ways. You can use as many 4-way switches as you want/need. Simply put them in circuit in the travelers. There will always be 2 3-way switches. one fed by the hot and one supplying the switchleg.

If you tell us all the wires in all the switches we might be able to help straighten this out. We might need the light fixture wiring as well but switch wiring is a good start.
