My unit is about 16 years old and has worked fine until recently when the timer motor failed. I replaced the motor and have recycled the unit several times but have no soft water. I checked the venturi and it was clean. Now I am wondering if the resin needs changing.
What is the life expectancy of resin on municipal water that is not exceptionally hard?

Depending on the amount of chlorine in city water, 7-12 years is reasonable life for Sears softener resins. My 24,000 grain Sears unit stopped regenerating after about 7 years of city water use in Houston area.

It is time to replace. You are lucky to have gotten that much life out of it. From here on out it will be a money pit. Go with a Fleck valve and you will not deal with a problem for a long time. Just make sure it is sized correctly for your application. The ecodyne type systems(ge,kenmore, whirlpool) typically last 3-6 years before constantly failing. The wholesale cost for parts are very expensive and have to be passed on to the consumer. As a authorized service company for these systems, we love it when people buy them. We can count on steady work for years:)
Parts and labor can equal the price of a new system.
