I'm making a lectern and the top is red oak. I spliced two pieces together using biscuits. Now, there is a prominent curve in the wood. Any suggestions how I can get it out before I stain and poly?

When wood is joined, the pieces are usually narrow rips. The benefit of using narrow rips is that the narrower the piece, the less it will cup. Additionally in joinery, these rips are often alternated by grain- one with the cup up, the next with the cup down.

If I understand correctly, You have joined 2 wide pieces? And the cup is in each piece, or both of them together are cupped?

At any rate, you would probably either want to run it through a thickness planer, or belt sand the (you-know-what) out of it. The problem I foresee is that those pieces likely will not stay flat- they will continue to cup to some extent in the future even if you get them flat, due to changes in humidity.

In my experience, warped wood that cannot be corrected by jointing or planing should be discarded.

Yep. I going to try wetting it between two pieces of plastic with heavy weights on top. If the warp strightens out I'll then dry it out with weights on top.

Or, I may go up and buy some oak plywood and biscut in some real oak edges.

Thanks for the replies, I sort of knew that it may be a helpless cause.

wetting will likely only make the warpage worse.

For the record, the wetting did not help. It also did not make it worse.

Purchased the oak ply this morning and will edge with real oak board.

Thanks again for the responses.
